Somchai Kaewthong
As Thailand’s last true couturier, Somchai “Kai” Kaewthong emphasizes the highest level of craftsmanship and customization to his work. “Everyday clothes can be found anywhere,” says the veteran designer. “But for evening wear, bridal dresses and clothes that require special skills and craftsmanship, our clients come to us.”
Although many of his designs feature complex patterns and generous amounts of embellishments, Kai says that his secret to success is to “create clothes that look complicated but are in fact simple.” And that, precisely, is what gives Kai its irresistible, inimitable allure.
Somchai Kaewthong, Known as Kai, is that last of Thailand’s true couturiers. Famed for his lavish evening wear and bridal couture, Kai designs clothes that make women look beautiful and feel special. He has dressed generations of best dressed ladies from first ladies, stars, celebrities and CEO’s. But designing for the Thai royal family is his greatest sources of pride.
Kai’s legendary atelier produces finely crafted made-to-order clothes for day and evening. His clients range from society stalwarts to teens attending their first prom to brides and bridesmaids and include both Thai and other Asian ladies of sophisticated taste. Born on January 25th, 1947 in the southern province of Yala, Kai completed junior highschool at Kanaradbumrung School in his home town. At age 16 he moved to Bangkok to attend the college of fine arts, the alma mater of many of the country’s top artist. Later he enrolled at the prestigious Silpakorn University, but left after this junior year to open his first atelier.
The year was 1969. Kai’s design flair and meticulous attention to detail soon attracted the attention of Bangkok’s well heeled, fashionable ladies, and he has his first show the following year. As his fame rose, he was invited by Thai airways international, Thailand’s national flag carrier, to stage a fashion show called “Beautiful Thailand,” in the Philippines to help promote the country’s tourism. Later he designed for a ten-country European tour with the airline, introducing his brand of classic clothes with a refined twist to the world. Over the years he has shown at many ASEAN (Association of South Asian Nations) Fashion forums, cementing his reputation as one of the top names in Thai Fashion.
Kai has been featured in several Elle Thailand editorials beginning in 1999 and was voted The Icon Designer of Thailand by this influential magazine in 2001. When the magazine launched Elle Bangkok Fashion week, the countries most prestigious fashion event, he served on the advisory board from 1999-2006, and has shown there since 2005. He is also a sought after guest speaker in fashion design, and has to date lectured at prestigious fashion design departments around the country and at events hosted by various professional and social clubs.
Kai continues to be involved full time in both the creative and business aspect of the fashion house that bears his name. Kai Boutique produces two collections a year. The latest, Style Forever, is a return to romantic femininity, featuring short dresses crafted from the finest fabrics and lace in pastel hues, and bridal creations that combine sophisticated styling and design with sumptuous hand-crafted details.

คุณไข่เป็นชาวยะลาโดยกำเนิด สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับมัธยมต้นจากโรงเรียนคณะราษฎร์บำรุง จังหวัดยะลา จากนั้นจึงเดินทางมาศึกษาต่อที่วิทยาลัยเพาะช่าง กรุงเทพมหานคร และคณะจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรมและ ภาพพิมพ์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรตามลำดับ แต่หลังจากเรียนจบปี 3 มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรได้ตัดสินใจเปิดร้านภาพพิมพ์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรตามลำดับ แต่หลังจากเรียนจบปี 3 มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรได้ตัดสินใจเปิดร้านรับตัดเสื้อผ้าสตรีที่ชั้น 2 โรงภาพยนตร์สยามเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2512 และยึดอาชีพออกแบบเสื้อผ้าเรื่อยมา
ไข่บูติกทำแฟชั่นโชว์ครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2513 ในปีต่อมาได้รับเชิญจากการบินไทยให้ร่วมทำแฟชั่นโชว์ “Beautiful Thailand” ที่ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์เพื่อประชาสัมพันธ์ประเทศไทย และหลังจากนั้นก็ได้ทำโชว์ร่วมกับการบินไทยทั่วยุโรป 10 ประเทศ รวมทั้งเป็นตัวแทนนักออกแบบไทยไปแสดงผลงานในกลุ่มประเทศอาเซียน 8 ปีติดต่อกัน
ไข่บูติกร่วมแสดงในนิตยสาร ELLE Thailand ซึ่งเป็นนิตยสารที่ทรงอิทธิพลที่สุดในประเทศไทยเป็นครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2542 และในปี พ.ศ. 2546 ก็ได้รับการยกย่องจากนิตยสารดังกล่าวในฐานะ The Icon Designer of Thailand เมื่อ ELLE Thailand จัดงาน Bangkok Fashion Week คุณไข่ก็ได้ร่วมเป็นที่ปรึกษาการจัดงานตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2542 – 2549 และร่วมทำโชว์ในปี 2548 – 2549
ปัจจุบันช่างเสื้อชั้นครูของไทยผู้นี้ยังคงยุ่งกับการออกแบบคอลเลคชั่นใหม่ปีละ 2 ครั้ง และเป็นวิทยากรให้กับนักศึกษาคณะแฟชั่นของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย, มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์, มหาวิทยาลัยรังสิต, มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏ, มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีราชมงคล ตลอดจนสมาชิกสมาคมและองค์กรต่างๆตามที่ได้รับการร้องขอ
หลักการทำงานของคุณไข่คือ “ทำงานให้ง่ายไม่ซับซ้อนแต่ดูเหมือนยาก” และด้วยฝีมือบวกกับประสบกรณ์กว่า 42 ปี จึงทำให้ชื่อ “ไช่” เป็นตำนานของการทำเสื้อสวยฝีมือขั้นเทพที่บ่งบอกรสนิยมและเสริมบุคลิกของผู้สวมใส่ให้โดดเด่นชวนมอง และเป็นการลงทุนที่คุ้มค่า ไม่ว่าเวลาจะผ่านไปนานเพียงใดคุณไข่ยังบริหารงานห้องเสื้อและดูแลงานออกแบบด้วยตัวเอง คอลเลคชั่นล่าสุดของห้องเสื้อคือ Style Forever เป็นคอลเลคชั่นชุดสั้นและชุดแต่งงานที่เน้นความหวานโรแมนติกในสไตล์เรีนบโก้ สง่างามตามแบบฉบับของไข่
